An investment exceeding Rs. 75,000 crore, PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana aims at lowering the electricity bills while boosting employment opportunities. This newly launched free electricity scheme promises free electricity to one crore households in India, who install roof top solar panels. Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched this scheme on 15th February 2024 to cover up to 40% of the cost of the solar panels. In this blog we will look into the salient features of the scheme and how Tamil Nadu home owners can be benefitted through it.

What is this Scheme all About?

Launched by the central government, this scheme aims to offer financial benefits to home owners opting for rooftop solar panels. The scheme will grant up to 300 units of free electricity every month to approximately one crore households across India. The PM surya ghar muft bijli yojana in Tamilnadu promises an annual savings of Rs. 15,000 for home owners consuming upto 300 units per month by installing a 3kW rooftop solar panel.

In addition, a 40% extra subsidy is offered for systems between 2 and 3 kW in capacity and 60% of the cost of the panel is covered for systems up to 2kW in capacity. According to the scheme, 1 kW, 2kW and 3 kW systems will fetch a benefit of Rs. 30, 000, Rs. 60,000 and Rs. 78, 000 (or more) respectively.

How to Apply?

Follow these step-by-step procedures to register for the scheme:

Register on the subsidy website with state, electricity company, consumer number, mobile, and email.
Log in with your consumer number and mobile number and fill out the application form.
Once feasibility approval is done, contact with a registered vendor from your DISCOM.
Once the panels are installed, apply for net meter after submitting plan details.
After the net meter installation & DISCOM inspection you will receive a commissioning certificate.
